Reclaiming the Blade

Many of you know about the upcoming release of the film Reclaiming the Blade at the Sundance Film Festival in January. This film documents the history of Western Martial Arts and its modern form as it exists today. We have been contacted by Galatia Films to sponsor the Fight Club Finder, a resource for WMA schools around the world.
http://www.reclaimingtheblade.com:80/main/?page_id=47
This is a great opportunity for schools to get continual exposure from the release of this movie, its subsequent theatrical debut, DVD release and finally television release. I hope you will register your school and join us in the excitement we feel about WMA getting the mainstream exposure we see this film bringing to it.

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone out there could give me any information on insurance that their WMA school or club has in place, if any. There are several insurance companies out there that cater to the eastern end of things, but I’m curious as to what kind of coverage any of you have found for the western end of things. Thanks so much.

St. Brides-- Army of Dalkieth Invites all those interested in the real living history of the Renaissance time period to attend the premier Northern California Event.......

Action in the Low Countries------ The School of the Renaissance Soldier. April 4-6th
At Gibson Ranch State Park in Sacramento CA

This event last year had a battle contingent of 141 persons.....

We are expecting this number to double this year.......

At What event can you experience a Renaissance style Battle with over 200 soldier wielding pike----- holding off 30 cavalry--- Black powder matchlocks blazing and Cannons booming?

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......

Persons who consider themselves Military oriented should heavily consider attending this Workshop in order to knock the dust off their boots and prepare for the up coming season....

With a literal City of period pavilions and tents, sutlers, cooks, vendors, musicians--- This event is quickly becoming the best opportunity for the Renaissance Faire Society (in general) to participate in a great educational and yet highly entertaining event.

I'm so glad to have found this tribe! I just took up running long ago and when I feel like I want to drop dead in the final minutes I put on the Superman theme on my walkman and I imagine myself sword fighting on ice-skates in a huge rink and it really pulls me through to the end. Now I realize I am ready to really pick up a sword and give it a try. I did take a very intro presentation to fencing last year but the swords were made out of that nerf ball material. You can't chop off a head with one of those. I need the real thing!

Hello all,
Just a quick introduction. My name is Sean. I've been involved in western matial arts and recreation groups for about 17 years now here in Arizona. My primary interests are rapier & longsword work, both Italian & German. Currently, my study group and I are looking at joining or affiliating w/ a lager group such as ARMA or AEMMA. In reading the various tribe.net group postings, I find many inividuals like myself here. Thank you Jim (Koch), for introducing me to this group. I hope to network, learn and share with you all. Thanks.

what's the point of fencing

is anyone else tired of how silly fencing is and has become? i did some electric fencing with the cal fencing team for a bit and it just seems so silly now. i mean, the rules make no sense in terms of swordsmanship. why can't you show your back to someone? or then there's right of way...and then there's the strip instead of a circle or something like that. i mean, if you flush right, you can pretty much be guaranteed to win a point from the start. i dunno, i didn't like fencing much. i'd much rather do rapier fighting, which is what fencing came from in the first place.

The Truck is Dead! Help Needed!

Yep! According to my insurance claims adjuster, the cost of fixing the truck far exceeds the trucks value. So as far as they're concerned, it's a total loss. I either have to eat it on what they offer me which is a pitance or I can keep the truck and they'll settle for what it would cost for junk salvage. Neither options are any better. I'm hoping to get another used vehicle, but with me current job and the amount of driving I do and the salary I make plus really lousy credit scores, there's no way in hell I could afford even a half decent vehicle.
I did find cars on Craigslist and myspace classified which I will check out, but will have to fork out at least 5K which I don't have, so I'm seeking donations of $1-2 to help towards picking up another P.O.S. so I can get to work and not loose my job, which I love very much. Donations can be made to my paypal account at siredmund.carey@gmail.com through PAYPAL. Any help will be deeply appreciated and you'll have my gratitude for life.

I started an exclusive group called "Wooden Swordfighters Anonymous," around the Los Angeles area. We JUST started, and we're going to specialize in simply making cheap lumber wasters, make-shift armor, and pretty much just break these things against each other (or on ourselves, hence the armor). We haven't finished drafting our regulations or anything, bt we're not really a reenactment group like the SCA or anything, because whatever we do won't be truly for any historical purpose... but swordfighting is damned fun, and stress-relieving!

So I live in SF and have been getting fat. I was wondering if anyone would like to fight with shinai? The people I usually spar with are now spread out across the country and I myself have less time than I did. I would like to get back into the swing of things and perhaps pick up some new techniques while I'm at it. I can get pretty much anywhere in SF.

The Cimmerian Art of War!

It looks like everyone is boosting their swordplay schools here, I might as well jump in and join the fray.

I first lifted sword in 1975 - it was in a medieval reenactment group. Soon thereafter I read my first Conan story. I was hooked on both, and the two - the reality and the fantasy - became firmly entwined with each other.

Since then my quest has been: How can I be like Conan? The strength, obviously, but what about the panther-like stealth and agility? What of his style of swordsmanship? I went forth and studied whatever style of swordplay I could find, from fencing and SCA combat to iaido and kendo and escrima from the Philippines and the system of Italy's Fiore dei Liberi - and more.

Finally I think I've got the system down; it's not the static posing with a 8-lb crowbar that you have seen in the movies. Conan cut as fast as a cobra, striking off heads before his opponents even knew they were in a battle! Does anyone here have the will to become a barbarian warrior?

This is a letter of intent to once again take up arms in the practice, drill and study of the European renaissance style of sideswording and rapier. These classes are open to anyone with a desire to learn to use a sword properly and with skill.

The Bankeside Schoole of Defense is once again resuming classes for those interested in learning the serious art of European martial arts. Our current curriculum begin with the single rapier and sidesword. As one becomes more advanced, we work with the rapier's companion weapons and other weapons to include English Broadsword, Italian and German Longsword, the quarterstaff and 18th century smallsword.

We will begin classes on Saturday, June 24th 2006 in the city of Riverside, CA at 12 noon. We train every Saturday at this location.

If you are interested in learning to properly use that Rapier you own and carry or you just want to learn 16th century style of sidesword and rapier fighting, then I invite you to join with us in preparing and perfecting our personal skills and getting ready for next years events. All are welcome to participate.

The Bankeside Schoole of Defense has been in existence since 1998 and is dedicated to the serious art of European marital arts with an emphasis on historical and theatrical movements of the period.

Seattle Warrior Work-out!

Hail all Warriors!

The frost is off the ground and the sap is rising in the trees, as is the blood in our veins. Its time to dust off the duct-taped foam and stretch our sword-wielding muscles for our weekly sparring sessions.

For those that are only hearing about this gathering for the first time, You are being invited into a three year old tradition of honor and friendly competition that meets at the feet of the Fremont Troll to play at the noble art of the sword. Whether you have formal training in any style, or none at all, you are welcome to come learn, train, play, and laugh with other Warriors form Seattle and around the Sound. We have had folks drive up all the way from Olympia every week. This is an extremely loose and informal group. There are no dues and no obligation to show, unless you have given your word that you will.

Traditionally, we have met at the Fremont Troll on Wednesday or Thursday around 8:00 pm, but this year, I'm doing a little market research to insure the greatest turn-out. Please respond to this message with the best day of the week and time for you to join us. In making your decision, please consider that we've been known to patron the Dubliner for a pint or two after the carnage. So, If you don't want to show up at your weekly dinner with Grandma stinkin' like a sweaty pub monkey, chose wisely.

We would prefer that everyone bring their own Boffer, but it is not at all unusual for us to share. If you would like to build your own, I have some plans that I found on the net and edited somewhat. Let me know and I'll message them to you. For now, dream of flashing duct-tape and the glory of battle.

Peace,
Otter.

Do you teach fencing as well? I have been looking for a local venue for sabre fighting. I have fought with a foil but I have always liked how sabre fighting looked. I am also interested in rapier and dagger.
