Wooden SA

I started an exclusive group called "Wooden Swordfighters Anonymous," around the Los Angeles area. We JUST started, and we're going to specialize in simply making cheap lumber wasters, make-shift armor, and pretty much just break these things against each other (or on ourselves, hence the armor). We haven't finished drafting our regulations or anything, bt we're not really a reenactment group like the SCA or anything, because whatever we do won't be truly for any historical purpose... but swordfighting is damned fun, and stress-relieving!

*psssst* SCA fighting is nothing like any kind of historical. they just call it stick jocking. it's its own thing, not really related to anything historical. BUT it is rather ubiquitous, and thus, easier to get into in a larger number of places. hardly ideal, but it works.

*psssst* there is a growng number of SCA fighters who are pushing the style towards a more historical form. While it is true that because of some DEEPLY ingrained traditions within the SCA culture. Which occured mostly because when that style was evolving there was not a wide array of resources to learn from, so it was invented by people who took what they knew and applied it to rattan. We may never get it to be purely historicaly accurate, but we do have the ability to offer a more "spontaneous" form of free play than most other WMA/HWMA forms out there; without going over to the foam weapon/LARP, which has about as much to do with actual fighting, as Renn Faires do to history. No flames intended here, but I am getting a little sick of people jumping on the "let's bash the SCA bandwagon", when peoples involvement in the SCA is precisely one of the catalysts for the growing surge in interest in HWMA. Yes the SCA has some glaring errors, but as a jumping off spot to get your feet wet safely it has a damn good track record...........sorry this is a bit of a "hot topic" with me right now. As far as starting a new group, best of luck to you. Take a lesson from history and look at what has worked for the people who came before you. Personally I am looking for a better blend of SCA "free play" and accurate technique, so I study outside the SCA and selectively apply what I have learned within their rule set.

well, i play SCA too, I like it because it's such a large inclusive group. i play outside of the SCA with more historical stuff too.

Have you heard of the new sidesword movement taking form? I've got some nice hopes for it. Apparently the tests have gone well, but it hasn't caught on everywhere yet. There are a few groups that are more accurate to sword fighting than the SCA, but they tend to be small and have very high barriers to entry (ie much stricter armor requirements) which keep them small.

There's also a lot of people who play with their own small groups as well as the SCA. I really do appreciate the SCA, as I could never have gotten so far into armored combat without it, but we all recognize that it's not quite what we want. We just accept the compromise so that more people can play and because traditions are very hard to get around.

Well it sounds like we're both in the same boat. Unfortunately I lost my HWMA syudy group when I moved from Denver to Cleveland, so I mostly do just SCA for now. Hopefully I will be to put together a study group out here.
